Cherrystone Auctions, March 21st Sale
Cherrystone Auctions March 21st Sale. By M.A.Sherwood-Jenkins
Not quite so many lots for the Russia enthusiast in this auction but a respectable range of between two and three hundred including all the manifestations. I have to confess to finding the catalogue layout a little irritating in the way that the Russia area is split up rather than being concentrated . This entails too much flicking back and forth jumping from all the separate manifestations and permutations of Russian philately possible. That said the illustrations are excellent and the lots on offer very tempting if somewhat highly estimated. Included in this auction were a range of Soviet proofs and essays, some of which were incredibly attractive. Prices on these varied considerably depending upon design, artist, issued or not and general attractiveness. Prices began around the $250 mark and went into the thousands for some of the more "desirable" pieces. The auction also contained a very nice Ukrainian SSR essay which sold for $850. Lot 2243 was an interesting bulk lot of covers but one with a price tag of $10,000 which puts it out of most collectors reach and a risk for dealers buying unseen. For anyone with a bent towards the cosmos and all things related to the Russian space programme there were some very nice autographed items in the sale on the 20th with items from all the major cosmonauts and a host of the lesser known ones (which are in fact correspondingly scarcer if less sought after.) Overall a good strong Russia section with items worth picking out.
